CONFERENCE REPORT NCPA 2017

The 9th Natonal Conference Of Paediatric Anaesthesia (NCPA 2017) was organized by the King George Medical University (KGMU) Lucknow from 17-19 Feb, 2017 under the aegis of Indian Association Of Paediatric Anaesthesiologists. The participants included esteemed faculty in the field of Paediatric Anaesthesiology from India & abroad (USA, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Singapore), Delegates & PG Residents from across the nation.

In preparation for this Conference, a situational analysis was carried out by a specially constituted 'Multidisciplinary Working Group' comprising of the Officials from Academic & Administrative staff from the KGMU. The key areas of focus identified & earmarked, targets set & feedback mechanism in place, resources worked out & finalized, responsibilities & time frame allocated, the spirited bandwagon of foot soldiers under the able guidance of the Organizing Committee headed by Prof VK Bhatia, Prof Anita Malik & Prof (Maj) Sanjay Choubey set out for the march ahead with a military precision.

The Conference Workshop included lectures, discussions, role playing and 'hands-on' Basic skills training. In addition, practical skills training by facilitators was conducted, using conventional and electronic training tool based on the standard reference and training manual pertaining to the evidence based practice advisory for Paediatric Anaesthesia. Practical skills teaching on patient safety best practices, CPR, Simulation, Nerve Blocks, Airway Management for Resuscitation and safe use of equipment (Oxygen, Airways). The participants were trained in the use of these tools for implementation of good practices.

The topics in the Scientific Session covered in lectures and discussions included team responsibility and organization of anaesthetic care facilities; patient safety; disaster planning: appropriate use of oxygen; management of bleeding; basic anaesthetic and resuscitation techniques; monitoring and evaluation on quality of care, anaesthetic challenges in low resource settings to the myths, controversies & future trends in pediatric anaesthesiology.

The icing on the cake was the felicitation of Dr K Prabhawati with the Dr Snehlata Dhayagude Oration award followed by the launch webcast of the IAPA Guidelines 2017.

The Cultural evening saw individual/group talent show which in themselves were seemingly epic in the moment. The ramp walk & the gigs build up the spirit for a perfect Saturday evening banquet. To sum it up, there was agreement on the relevance of the academic contents on guiding day-to- day practice and it was felt that these would be a useful resource for re-enforcement and further enhancement of the training of the anaesthesiologists. The conference brought together delegates from all corners of our nation; the sessions allowed plenty of scope for informal interaction & exchanges during breaks, both on academic as well as social front.

Special words of thanks go to the President IAPA Dr Pradnya Sawant, Secretary IAPA Dr M Subrahmanyam, Treasurer IAPA Dr Vibhavari Naik, the Executive Members IAPA, the people of eminence/excellence in the field of Paediatric Anaesthesiology & the esteemed seniors whose unflinching support has been incredible and overwhelming. It has been a fantastic journey together! The ‘Big Biryani Fight’ now shifts from one City Of Nawabs to the other! Waiting to see you all at Hyderabad NCPA 2018. Long live IAPA.
